The Bonobo Guide To A Great Interview

Job interviews can be tough but, as experts in digital recruitment, we know quite a lot about them. Discover our top tips to ensure you’re totally unflappable and incredibly employable.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail

It’s corny but it’s true; if you haven’t done your research, you’re going to find yourself in a sticky situation. Make sure you’ve researched your potential employer and understand the company values and ethos and, above all, the qualities they’re looking for in an employee. It’s a good idea to follow them on social media to keep up-to-date with company news and views.

Testing, testing

Practice makes perfect as they say, so testing yourself with possible interview questions is a great way to prepare some answers and boost your confidence prior to the big day. A quick online search will throw up dozens of interview-style questions for you to practise with, and spend some time thinking of situations from previous work that you can use to back up your answers and wow your employer.

All smiles

Building a good rapport is crucial, so be confident, smile and relax. Hopefully you’re interested in what you’re applying for and that should shine through; prepare some questions to ask at the end of the interview to really show off how keen you are (and impress them with all that research you did!). Throwing in a firm handshake and solid eye contact never hurt either.

Now listen carefully

Listen carefully to each question and answer directly. If you’ve practiced answering interview questions, your brain will help you out by supplying the great ideas you drilled into it (thanks brain). Concentrate on why you want this job and what you’ll gain from it and use those ideas to inform your answers.

And finally…

Always try and be positive: that means no bad-mouthing your previous employer and focus on enjoying the interview as much as possible. Not getting the job doesn’t make the interview a waste of time; every interview is an experience to learn from and keep improving.
